The Environment Committee of the European Parliament has given the first green light to stop sales of cars and vans with diesel or petrol engines since 2035.
On 11 May 2022, the Environment Committee of the European Parliament approved by a narrow majority (46 votes in favor, 40 against and two abstentions), its position on the rules presented by the EU Commission to review the performance standards on CO2 emissions. for new vehicles.
The legislative proposal was born as part of the ‘Fit for 55’ package, which provides for a 55% cut in CO2 emissions by 2030. In particular, the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions by 55% compared to the levels of the 1990, with the aim of reaching “carbon neutrality” by 2050.
To reach the target, according to the proposal of the EU executive, car manufacturers should reduce CO2 emissions from cars by 55% and those from vans by 50% by 2030. To then reach 100% starting from 2035.
The sale of zero-emission cars and vans is therefore expected from 2035. The text will now go through the plenary session of the European Parliament in June.
