Piedmont will host the first motorway rainwater collection and reuse plant built in Italy. This is an innovative pilot project, financed by the Ministry of Infrastructure, which will initially reside near the Biandrate/Vicolungo toll booth, but which from next year will involve the entire A4 Turin-Milan section.
The collection system will allow multiple and sustainable reuse of the water resource. The creation of water reservoirs appears to be an important strategy, especially in light of the strong threats to water availability that have characterized recent years.
“The motorway system, with its numerous and significant impermeable surfaces, constitutes an extraordinary tool for intercepting the water resource which, thanks to a special collection and regimentation system, will flow into conservation tanks for future use” said Federico Lenti, director of the A4 section of the Turin-Milan Astm.
The water collected will be used to meet needs in the motorway context, such as within toll stations and service areas; moreover, they can also be used to satisfy the needs of adjacent external realities, such as for agricultural and industrial uses of local realities.
