Design and sustainability, the design revolution

The European Commission has presented a package of new proposals on the circular economy that relate to the eco-design of products.

The design phase of a product determines more than 80% of the environmental impact of a product.

The design phase has been under observation for some time because from here it is possible to affect the actual contents of sustainability by taking into account the raw materials, the manufacturing processes and the destiny of the product once its original function has ended.

The 2022 edition of the Salone del Mobile in Milan, which will take place from 7 to 12 June, has also chosen sustainability and eco-design as its themes.

Eco-design means designing in a sustainable and environmentally friendly way, following the principles of the circular economy. Through the design of a product, it is possible to pay attention to various aspects that contribute to making it more durable, repairable, reusable, recyclable and much more.

Designers today are required to design in a way that facilitates modification, improvement and repair of products by simplifying partial and specific component disassembly. The costs and efforts required to replace any defective individual components are reduced, adapting the products to the needs of the consumer and extending their use.
