FAO: Expansion of agricultural land is the greatest threat to forests

null

In the context of the 15th World Forest Congress held in Seoul from 2 to 6 May, it emerged that the expansion of agricultural land is the greatest threat to forests.

The data presented are alarming and confirm the well-known trend on the state of the world’s forests but in particular those of the tropics.

The first cause of deforestation (in Africa, South America and Asia) is the expansion of agricultural land, with an incidence of 50 per cent of the total deforested areas; in second place are pastures with 38.5 per cent, concentrated in the areas of the tropics.

There is good news though. In fact, between 2010 and 2018, the deforestation rate fell by almost 30 percent compared to the previous decade. However, we must not let our guard down as South America and Africa continue to generate worrying data.

According to the FAO, investments in forest management will literally triple by 2030 and quadruple by 2050, reaching a global total of $ 203 billion a year.

Congress adopted the Seoul Declaration on Forests , with a key focus on how forests can help combat the multiple crises humanity faces, including climate change, biodiversity loss, land degradation, hunger and poverty.
